the display vaed. some were horrified by what they say it represents and others say it's a simple halloween display. >> i don't find anything offensive. i would say leave it up. >> reporter: steve parker couldn't believe his eyes. he tells us the city has come too far to promote diversity to take such a huge sep back. >> it's bigotry, racism, disgraceful. no other way about it. we all know, anybody, any educated person, you see somebody hanging from a noose, what that means. >> reporter: even after knowing they offended some people, the mayor told us this morning that he would not order them cut down. >> to the extend we have offended or scared anybody, i apologize. but i do not think that was -- being it wasn't the -- of course it wasn't the intend. >> reporter: later in the day when he returned he seemed to change his mind after steve parker gave him an earful.

>> my parents and grandparents -- this is offensive. >> reporter: after speaking to steve parker, the mayor said he would consider taking down the dummies. he met with several other city leaders and like we said before, he then took the dummies down. we are told they are prompt against a couple of trees in the park. back to you. >> lesson learned hopefully. as of this morning, the frederick chapter of the naacp said they received 30 calls from upset residents. the mayor says he will see to it that that display is not used next year. fbi pouring over grainy surveillance video looking for the man who opened fire outside a los angeles synagogue. the two victims are recovering after they were shot yesterday. police are looking into several possibility motives. they are questioning whether the shooter knew oneof the victims. >> a surprising twist in the case against a mother accused of leaving her own special needs daughter to die.

you may remember a lexi glover found in a creek last winter. her mother pled guilty to murder. now a jail employee has thrown a wrench into the proceedings. >> reporter: frieda glover was supposed to be sentenced today. instead, another delay because a jail employee is questioning her mental health. frieda glover entered a courtroom today for a sentencing hearing that did not happen. in the past, experts have found her nervous and anxious but competent to stand trial. now glover's lawyer says a nurse at the jail is raising questions about glover's mental health. >> at any time during the proceeding, the defense has a right for th matter the court has a right or the commonwealth to question the defendant's sanity mental capability. >> reporter: glover pled guilty to felony murder, child abuse and filing a false police

report. at first she told authorities that lexi was missing. days later it was found in a woodbridge creek. the judge delayed sentencing until he could hear from the nurse. >> it may come back to bite us and we have to go through this again at a later date. idon't want to do that. >> reporter: do you think she is mentally ill? >> no, i don't. >> reporter: leann harris says glover is the mother of the baby. >> i want her to see the grandbaby, this is sad. >> we wanted to see the end of it. we wanted justice for lexi, justice for lexi. do your time. >> reporter: so, glover is expected back here in prince william county court next thursday when a judge is likely to decide whether she should

have another mental health evaluation. >> that dictates whether a person serves time in a prison or hospital. a man is dead after falling from the roof of a home in new carrollton, maryland. he was working in the 6600 block of chestnut. another person is being treated but it's not clear why. no word whether the man owned the house or was a hired worker. a robbery ring in northern virginia targeting gold and diamond jewelry is linked to another break in. police believe the same ring that hit the house yesterday also robbed several other homes. neighbors believe the thieves are targeting indian immigrants. they have stolen personal information like passports and birth certificates. a violent night in the district. two murders within blocks of each other. the first around 12:30 a.m. in an alley near 48th and lee

street. police say deante ray was killed. the second in an alley at 46th and hunt. robert engleman was gunned down. north capitol street is open after a bad accident sent seven people including a clild to the hospital. two cars collided. one pedestrian was hit. capitol street was closed while police investigated. no word on the names or conditions of the people hurt in the crash. in four days, voters in virginia will pick a new governor. as the race heads into the final weekends, there is signs that this is republican bob mcdonnell's race to lose. >> reporter: creigh deeds has been reminding folks that he was trailing in the democratic primary last june before he mound a come from behind victory over his two opponents. but since last june, bob

mcdonnell has never trailed in the race. the latest average of polls from real clear politics paints a clear picture showing bob mcdonnell leading creigh deeds 54 to 40.3% putting mcdonnell ahead 14 points. in separate appearances this week, both men laid out their strategy for the final days. mcdonnell said he is concentrating on door to door campaign rallies. deeds is saying despite bad poll numbers, he has come from behind before. >> i have been behind before. i hardly ever run ahead. i run well from behind. we plan to get every vote by knocking on doors, making phone calls. >> it's get out the vote. the tv commercials have been cut, the radio, the male has been done. we are traveling to look our voters in the eye. >> reporter: deeds statement of confidence have history to back

it up. in 2005 attorney's general's race he lost to bob mcdonnel, he was training by a large margin. he wound up losing by a few hundred votes. >> interesting week next week. creigh deeds appeared on fox 5 to talk about the campaign. bob mcdonnell stopped by earlier this week. go to myfoxdc.com and click on the politics page. the transit agency began random security screenings at marks stations. sherri ly has more. >> reporter: maryland transit police set up security screening checkpoints inside the dorothy mark station for the morning rush hour. it's the first day of random screenings throughout the marcs system. like the airport, bags, luggage, packages may be checked and explosive sniffing

dogs. mtba won't say when or where the screenings happened telling people to arrive a few minutes earlier each day in case. >> that might be an inconvenience to people because you have to get here on time and even though sometimes marc does or doesn't run on time, you want to get to work on time. >> reporter: it's part of a grant over three years from the transportation security administration. the transit says the stepped up security is not in response to a specific threat. last year a man got on a mark train with an assault rifle capable of masked casualties. at the time that raised alarm over the apparent vulnerabilities in security. >> i'm concerned. it's dangerous. it could have been a bad, bad situation. >> reporter: ma carries more than 30,000 pele a day. some say inconvenient or not, the random security checks are needed. >> taking the train and public transportation, it's too much ofa great threat that, sure,

catching your flight isn't the only thing you have to worry about at the airport. police are issuing a major warning. thieves are scoping out cars in parking lots looking to steal a pricey piece of equipment. john henrehan has the latest on the crime crackdown. >> reporter: most of the

passengers we spoke with were unaware th in the long-term parking lots a and b, thieves have been hitting cars with alarming frequency in the last couple of weeks. >> little scary. i don't want my car to get broken into while i'm away. >> reporter: the thieves haven't had to break in. they are going under the vehicles, cutting off catalytic converters that typically cost more than a thousand dollars because of the pressure metals like platinum inside. >> tough times. everybody is grabbing things that they wouldn't normally grab. >> reporter: ten have been cut from the underside of cars at bwi in a one-week period in late october. the number one target vehicle for the thieves, toyota four runners, possibly because of the high clearance off the ground. take a look at this clearance versus this adjoining sedan low to the ground. with the four runner, they can get underneath, cut it off and

get out quickly. maryland transportation authority police are reviewing video. >> i think that they need to patrol the parking lot more often. >> reporter: police have added manpower, uniform and casual clothes officers. no arrests have been made. a spokesperson says they are working vigorously on the case. stewart and laura just returned to bwi from a vacation in florida. after putting the bug gage in their s.u.v., they listened for what would be a very noisy exhaust had someone swiped their catalytic converter. at marshal bwi airport, john henrehan, fox 5 news. >> if police can identify a suspect, they plan to charge the person with felony theft. in maryland that could get you up to 10 years in prison.

a search for survivors off the coast of california. a pentagon spokesperson says it's likely all nine crew members were killed but the search will continue. seven people were on the coast guard airplane when it slammed carrying two. the plane was searching for a missing boater and the chopper on a training exercise. this massive fire in india left five people dead. incredible pictures. it left nearly 200 people hurt. at least 35 teams of firefighters rushed to the scene as the flames spread to neighboring gas tankers. clouds of black smoke filled the sky. the refinery carries kerosene and petrol. families were evacuated. businesses in the area were closed. no word on what caused the explosion. secretary of state

hillary clinton is facing more tough questions about u.s. policy in pakistan. >> reporter: looking forward to the future instead of dwelling on the past, that was the tone secretary of state hillary clinton wanted to set at her meeting with pashtun elders in pakistan. >> part of what i want to do is leave the past behind, turn a page on our relationship. >> reporter: the meeting started off with handshakes and pleasantries. clinton says the u.s. is committed to helping the people of pakistan caught in the crossfire of militant attacks like the recent bombing in peshawar. >> one tribal leader saying the u.s. should use its power to negotiate instead of military might to battle the taliban and repair its image. clinton responded saying after september 11th they asked the taliban to turn over the people responsible and were told no, forcing the u.s. to take

action. >> even though we prefer negotiations and we agree with you about wisdom, we could not leave such a blatant attack unanswered especially after we tried to solve it peacefully. >> reporter: the secretary of state came under fire for not answering questions about u.s. drone operations in the area along the pakistan-afghan border involving highly classified cia operations, operations that angered many in pakistan because of civilian deaths. clinton would say there is a war going on and the obama administration is come noted helping pakistan defeat the insurgents and terrorists that threaten the stability of a nuclear armed nation. following breaking news right now into our newsroom. we are getting live pictures we want to show you in a moment. this is in rockville. a car, as we know, has run into

a home. we do know that a victim, one person is hurt, bleeding but conscious we are told and is in the vehicle still. emergency workers are trying to get the person out of the car. pepco is being called to the scene while the rescue is being happening. no word if anybody was home at the time. the victim once out of the car will be transported to a hospital. it's unknown if anybody was in the house and what the extent of the injuries were. so, we will continue to follow that. all we know is it's happening in rockville. we don't have an address. as soon as get that, we will bring it to you. >> let's talk about the forecast. what you want to now, will it be nice tomorrow night for halloween. >> gary mcgrady has the answers, lay it on us. >> i have been doing this to know that everybody has a different definition of nice. there is a little flexibility, right? let me show what you is going on.

some of the stories we are following, continuing to follow a breaking news story out of rockville. a car into a house there. sky fox is live over the scene. the car apparently clipped a

pole then slammed in the home. no one was inside at the time. the driver of the car has been taken to a local trauma center. dummies hanging from trees in frederick cut down after complaints that they were offensive. some say it looked like lynching victims. the mayor initial help refused to take them down but now they have been removed from the trees. the mother of a gil left to die in an icy creek may not face prison time after all. fred day glover pled guilty to the murder of her daughter but a jail worker says she may be mentally ill. another person died from swine flu in maryland. the health department said the victim had underlying conditions. anyone under 10 years old can be protected with one dose of the vaccine. previously they thought some age groups might need two

doses. no decision has been made for children between 6 months and 10. there are ways to ptect your kids when they are trick or treating. claudia coffey joins us now. >> reporter: health officials in our area say this is advice and tips that we should be practicing every halloween but the timing concerns with the virus make it more important than ever. asterisk or treaters go door to door this halloween, they will have more on their mind than eating too much candy. >> wash your hand before you eat it. then you don't have anything to worry. with hayne at the -- h1n1 at the forefront, they are putting out tips. these tips are not meant to scare parents but be on the safe side. >> people's awareness of the influenza and how easily it can

craig boswell has more. >> reporter: stokes plunged after a labor department report revealed the largest drop in consumer spending in nine months. the losses come one day after reports indicated 3 1/2% economic growth. today vice prident joe biden highlighted recent developments and attributed it to the stimulus package. >> without the economic recovery act, it's unlikely this economy would have expanded at all this last quarter. it may have even contracted. >> reporter: the administration says spending from the largest stimulus program in history saved or created about 640,000 jobs, many from construction and infrastructure projects. the white house says the jobs figure could be as high as one million. an associate press analysis found those numbers miss calculated. >> the report that is used to tell us how many jobs the stimulus created is wrong. there are errors in it.

ryan seacrest. freaky enough, this guy has tried to get near him several times this month which we just learned about. today he went into the lobby where the newsroom is and said i want to see ryan seacrest. they recognized him. they brought m down to security. lapd booked him on a violation of the orange county order not get near him. but ryan is freaked out by this and very scared. >> mike, i'm curious, no one was hurt in the incident, were they? >> reporter: no, the guy didn't get very far. he got in the lobby. once they recognized him, they took him down. they called security, got him in handcuffs. but ryan was in the building which is more scary than not. >> indeed it is. >> michael jackson's film this is it is raking in the big bucks. what are we hearing about his friend arnie klein saying he deserves some of the profits. >> oh, this is so unbelievable. i can't believe that his doctor would do this.
